Welcome to The Postojna Cave – looks like curtains, spaghetti or glass
If someone tells you to visit a cave while having a trip to Slovenia you might not be interested. But when seeing it you think you are visiting another planet. You won’t believe that the things you see are actually made of karst stone. They look rather like curtains, spaghetti or glass. Words can hardly describe the impression one has inside the caves.
The Postojna Cave is a fantastic web of chambers, tunnels, halls, passages and galleries. It is the greatest tourist fascinations in south-west of Slovenia and one of the largest karst memorials in the world. In 1872 railway lines were laid in the cave. Electricity arrived in 1884. On entering caves you get on a train which takes you into the underground world of one of the largest karst caves in Europe. People are then divided into the languages they speak and a tourist guide then informs you about the history of the caves. It is lovely to walk amongst all the beautiful calcite formations, stalactites and stalagmites bursting in a variety of shapes and colours. It truly takes your breath away. It has taken thousands of years to form some of these limestone sculptures. The constant temperature in the caves ranges from 8 to 10° C. There is also a concert hall that is known for its acoustics, if you are lucky enough you can even experience a concert there. For example, at Christmas time some life Christmas cribs are organized. One can hear tunes like “The Silent Night” and see the scenes from the birth of Jesus.
During cave-tour there is an opportunity to see a few aquarium Proteus – the human fish or olm, without extra paying. It is said that they were baby dragons which the high tide brought onto the surface. It has been explained that all human fish are babies that have taken on adult functions. And if someday they should grow up? Would they really be dragons?
One can also see other sorts of cave animals, like tiny spiders, the cave water louse, tiny-neck beetles, grasshoppers, butterflies, water snails, bats, etc. You certainly have to visit a beautiful place in the earth belly of Postojna.
Imagine, your friend from some other country visited the Postojna cave. Write a dialogue. Ask him about his impressions of the cave, animals, the history, the legend of the human fish and more.
Predstavljaj si, da je k tebi prišel prijatelj iz druge države in da si je ogledal Postojnsko jamo. Napiši dialog. Povprašaj ga o vtisih o jami, o živalih, o zgodovini, o legendi o človeški ribici in še o čem.
