Michael Jacobson, a director of Centre for Science in the Public interest, from Washington was the first person to introduce the term junk food in 1972. He wanted to make people aware of the harmful effects of junk food and try to encourage people to eat a well-balanced diet. Junk food is the food that is low in nutritional value This is processed or ready-prepared food that people eat instead of or in addition to well-balanced meals. There are arguments in favour of junk food but on the other hand there are some drawbacks that should be taken into consideration.

 

For junk food
- It saves time as it is cooked and served quickly. It is less time consuming for a grown up to lunch at McDonalds. When you prepare meal at home you waste time for shopping, preparing a meal and washing up.
- A meal at a fast food restaurant is quite cheap.
- You can choose from a wide variety of hamburgers, salads and drinks.
Against junk food
- Junk food has little nutritional value and is high in fat, sugar and salt and calories. It contains little fibre, vitamins, minerals.
- Salty, fatty, sugary and spicy junk food increases the risk of developing heart diseases.
- Regular consumption of soft drinks leads to increased rates of bone fracture, tooth decay and other dental problems.
