Read some amazing facts about ambergris before you listen to the second part of the story about Luke.
Ambergris is a dull grey or blackish solid waxy substance. It is produced in the digestive systems of sperm whales. A sperm whale produces it to protect its gut from the very sharp beaks of the squid on which it feeds deep down in the ocean. These huge water animals cough up a soft, oily substance that floats on the surface of the ocean. After some time, this oily substance is transformed into a smooth lump of solid rock.
Ancient Egyptians burned ambergris as incense, while in modern Egypt ambergris is used for scenting cigarettes. During the Black Death in Europe, it was believed that ambergris could save people from getting the deadly disease. During the Middle Ages, ambergris was used as a medication for certain aches and diseases. Nowadays this valuable substance is used in the production of perfumes and that is why it is so valuable. Some people describe ambergris as floating gold or gold nuggets because of its value.
