Spotted Salamanders are black, dark grey or brown with 24 to 45 round yellow or sometimes orange spots. The belly is dark grey. The females may grow up to 25cm long. The males are usually 15 cm or less.
Did you know that salamanders’ bright yellow spots warn animals (predators) that they are poisonous? Bright colours in nature usually mean “Stop! Keep back!”. The spots are not lethally toxic. Salamanders are pretty but taste very bitter, like a very strong lemon, if another animal tries to eat them.
They are amphibians. They lay their eggs in water. The babies start to grow in the eggs. When they hatch out of the eggs they have two legs. First they live in the water. Gills help them to breathe under water.
When they get bigger, they grow two more legs. The gills get smaller and become stunted (go away). An adult salamander lives on land.
