The donkey, the table and the stick
Once upon a time, a boy named Jack was unhappy at home because his father beat him. So one day he decided to run away. He ran and he ran. And he ran right up against a little old woman who was gathering sticks. He did not apologize to run into her, but the woman was kind-hearted, and she took him to be her servant. He agreed, because he was very hungry. The old woman brought him to her house in the wood, where he served her for a year.
After twelve months, she called him to her, and said she would pay him well. She brought him a donkey out of the stable. Jack had to pull donkey’s ears to make him begin to ee—aw! When the donkey brayed, silver and gold coins dropped from his mouth.
Jack was very pleased and he rode till he reached an inn. There he
ordered the best food. But the innkeeper refused to serve him without
receiving money first. The young boy went off to the stable, pulled the
donkey's ears and received a lot of money. The innkeeper saw everything
through a crack in the door. When night came on he exchanged Jack’s
donkey with one of his owns. So next morning, Jack went back to his
father's house without knowing that he had another donkey.
Close to his home lived a poor widow with an only daughter. Jack and the
girl fell in love. But when Jack asked his father to marry the girl, he
said "Never till you have the money to keep her". Jack pulled his
donkey’s long ears. He pulled and he pulled, till one of them remained
in his hands. Although his donkey hee-hawed no silver and gold coins
came out. The father was angry and he beat his son out of the house.
