Luke: Have you got a friend from abroad? I do. My friend is Ana. She is from Slovenia. Although she is Slovenian, she speaks English very well. I like her very much, not only because she can speak languages well, but also because she is a nice and friendly person. I love to chat with her because she is funny, and she is also a patient listener.
Luke: Ana, your English is very good.
Ana: Thank you, Luke.
Luke: I know Slovenian is your mother tongue. Can you tell me, though ... how come you speak English so well? Do you speak any other languages too?
Ana: Yes, I actually also speak a little bit of French and Italian.
Luke: Wow. That makes three foreign languages, altogether. How impressive. How did you come to learn these languages?
Ana: I've been learning English for seven years, starting at primary school and now at secondary school. My French is not as good because I've only been learning it for two years now. I pick up Italian words every day because I live on the Italian border and communicate with my Italian friends.
Luke: Your English, though, is British English.
Ana: Yes. One of my teachers is British, and I spent a month in London at an international summer school. I think that's why I picked up a British accent.
Luke: I imagine you met other youngsters from different countries at that summer school in England.
Ana: Yes, and I was on an exchange in Spain and Poland too.
N: Interesting. Can you tell me some differences among English, Spanish, Polish, and Slovenian people? What makes a Pole different from someone in Slovenia or a Spaniard from a Pole? Do you think the Italians are similar to the French?
Ana: I think we don't differ much, maybe English people are a little more reserved. I believe the Spanish or the Italians are more talkative. I feel that the Slovenians and Poles are quite open and friendly.
Luke: OK. I agree with you.
