LOVE OF EXTREMES

Why do people do sports that may cost them their lives? Jot down at least three possible reasons. Then watch the video and compare them with the speakers' reasons. Are they the same?

Now, listen to some other reasons and fill in the gaps in the text below.

It seems that the reason for the increasing popularity of extreme sports in our society is to be found in a lifestyle that lacks excitement, thrill or adventure . Leading a sedentary life, having everything at arms reach, predictability , boredom... leave people unfulfilled . They, therefore, start to look for that rush of adrenaline that helps them feel alive and overcome their fears . Some people do extreme sports simply because they want to look cool and show_off or follow the fashion .

Find all the reasons for the popularity of extreme sports mentioned in the text.

Read short descriptions of some extreme sports. Which are they?

{freediving;mountain_biking;kitesurfing;bungee_jumping;BASE_jumping;rafting}
If you want to do this sport, you need to be able to hold your breath until you resurface because no scuba gear is allowed. Just you, your body and your breath.
{mountain_biking;freediving;kitesurfing;bungee_jumping;BASE_jumping;rafting}
Forget about the roads, you will do it on a rough terrain and you will need a bike that is specially designed for mountains.
{kitesurfing;freediving;mountain_biking;bungee_jumping;BASE_jumping;rafting}
An unpredictable adventure in the wind and on the waves with a kite and a board. Very dangerous.
{bungee_jumping;freediving;mountain_biking;kitesurfing;BASE_jumping;rafting}
Don't be surprised if you get a ticket for a jump as a birthday present. All you need is a special elastic cord, a bridge, or other high spot, and tons of courage to plunge.
{BASE_jumping;freediving;mountain_biking;kitesurfing;bungee_jumping;rafting}
Very dangerous, much like committing suicide from a tall building, but with a parachute.
{rafting;freediving;mountain_biking;kitesurfing;bungee_jumping;BASE_jumping}
This water sport is also considered to be recreational and people do it in groups. A raft, usually inflatable, is needed to travel down the river.

Work in small groups. Pick an extreme sport, do a Google search for information about it and describe it to your peers. They have to guess the sport.
